One of the coolest things about being a Columbus, Ohio photographer for more than 20 years is that I’ve had the privilege to truly watch families grow in a real way. I feel so lucky to have so many families trust me year after year and I always look forward to seeing how their kids have grown, and their personalities develop from toddlers to teens. Here is a peek into a few of my favorite moments I’ve captured of one family in particular, who have also become dear friends over the years.
Every year, schedules seem to get more hectic with growing school activities, sports and music practices, but somehow, every year, we manage to pull it off!
I love really getting to know the families I photograph – their interests, quirks, and what actually makes annual family pictures something they’ll look forward to. I’ll never forget one time a mom said to me something along the lines of “we’re going to go play in the woods with Kim!” My heart burst because more often than not, that’s exactly what we do every year and I love it!
Some seasons may feel a bit more chaotic than others – maybe kids don’t want to wear what you carefully picked out, or they’re just “having a day” but trust me when I say we’ll roll with it and it will be ok!
My favorite sessions are always those that aren’t rushed. I approach my family sessions more from the perspective of playing than posing. We may just take a walk in the woods together, or maybe it’s your backyard. Whatever scenario fits your season of life is one we’ll go with. The kids can show me their favorite spots, their new gymnastics skills, or the coolest rock they’ve just discovered. Parents, try not to stress, we’ll get a good one of everyone together. It just may not always happen the way you think it will.
Lastly, It’s not completely lost on me what it sometimes takes for the parents to get to this point. No doubt at times it must feel like a miracle just getting everyone dressed, loaded into the mini van, and showing up. Kudos to all the parents! I appreciate you so much and look forward to having you behind my camera again soon!
